Diabetic Symptoms

If you haven't been diagnosed with diabetes and you are suffering from any of the following symptoms, it is strongly suggested you get yourself off to see your Doctor straight away.

It is a simple matter to tell if you are diabetic - or even 'pre-diabetic' - and if you are, the sooner you get treating it, the better.

Do not put it off hoping the symptoms will magically get better.

They won't, they'll just get a lot worse.

Some of the symptoms you need to watch for:

* excessive and/or frequent urination

* constant hunger

* constantly feel thirsty and have to drink a lot

* rapid weight loss

* vision becomes blurred

* minor cuts and bruises take a long time to heal

* feel extremely tired all the time

* irritable

* you seem to pick up every infection that's around

Once you have been diagnosed, your Doctor will start you on a course of treatment. Type 1 diabetes require insulin injections, but Type 2, unless really bad, can be handled with oral medication or if it's in the early stages, by diet alone.

Aside from making changes to your diet, there are a few other things you'll have to do. What are referred to as "lifestyle" changes. Our sedentary lifestyle is a prime contributor to the huge rise in diabetes cases in the West.

Your health care provider will ensure you have a safe and reasonable exercise program to follow. It is in your own best interests to follow his/her suggestions. Exercise is particularly important for diabetics, even if you can only manage a 'brisk' walk each day.

You are also going to have to take particular care of your feet and eyes, as these are especially vulnerable to diabetes complications.

Ensure you see a chiropodist and optician regularly, so that they can catch any budding problems before they become serious
