One of the most basic changes you will have to make to your "lifestyle" is in relation to your diet.
Diet has played a large part - if not the major part - in the development of your diabetes mellitus.
There are many foods on the market today specifically for diabetics. However, for the most part they are not worth the extra money involved. You are looking for foods that are labelled low for carbohydrates, saturated fats, and sugars. You'll find standard "low fat" and "sugar free" or "no added sugar" items do just as well as those labelled "diabetic". It's also a darn sight cheaper too!
However, both of these types of foods come under the category "refined", "pre-packaged", etc and you want to reduce your consumption of those items as much as you can.
With the amount of "low fat" products being marketed these days, you wonder how we could possibly have such an obesity problem in the West. So, while they are better than the alternative high fat/sugar produce, don't let the 'low fat/sugar' label fool you into thinking it's really healthy. Use them sparingly.
So. We have to cut out the junk, and buy 'low fat/sugar' items, but keep those to a minimum. In short, we have to go back to REAL food.
There are plenty of books dealing with recipes for diabetics, but again, you'll find many suitable in normal 'healthy' or 'weight loss' type markets. If you don't wish to spend money on recipe books, a search on the internet should yield some good results.
